Hydraulic Design of Gates
No one is better suited to write the book "Hydraulic Design of Gates" than Professor Paulo Erbisti, because he gained very extensive personal experience through the professional tests he devoted to the irrigation project. Moreover, he combined a scientific spirit with a practical approach.
He knows well all phases of implementation, hydromechanical equipment from feasibility studies through installation and commissioning, as well as their behavior. This is a great advantage for engineers around the world.
This is because the extent of experience in Brazil in executing hydraulic works, especially water projects, is remarkable. (Professor Erbisti has worked on large electrical projects in various locations and in various responsibilities in his country).
Sluice and sector gates are among the most common movable hydraulic structures. They are used to regulate water level and flow discharge in irrigation canals, sediment flushing conduits of diversion dams, intake openings, and spillways of large dams.
Given that these gates are widely used, numerous empirical relationships and charts have been written over the past decades to estimate the passing discharge or the discharge coefficient of flow through these gates under submerged flow conditions.
Each of the existing empirical relationships is valid within a specific range, and outside that range their application is accompanied by a significant error.
In this research, by combining the energy relationship between the upstream section of the gate and the section of maximum flow contraction behind the gate, as well as the momentum relationship between the latter section and the downstream section of the gate, the amount of discharge passing through the gate under submerged flow conditions is calculated.
