Sedimentation in Reservoirs
When the first author began researching issues related to reservoir sedimentation
years ago, the lack of a book-type treatment of the subject immediately became apparent.
which has been published in the form of engineering reports and conference papers that are not easily accessible.
The topics in each chapter are sufficiently complex in themselves to warrant book-length treatment.
It is hoped that this conceptual review of the main topics in each subject area, together with a list of sources and case studies, will facilitate readers' understanding of existing and potential problems in their particular reservoir and basin and the types of remedial measures that have been useful at other sites.
The authors strongly feel that the most fundamental problem is the correct diagnosis of the sedimentation problem and its conceptual selection.
Effective action to address sedimentation
Appropriate action when the nature of the problem has been conceptually identified and
one or more courses of practical action have been identified. , the approach used for subsequent detailed technical studies is usually clear.
The first author's research on the subject of reservoir sedimentation began with Ariel Lugo and discussion of Puerto Rican reservoir problems several years later with A. Santiago Vazquez.
Both authors wish to express their special thanks to Maria Margarita Irizarry, who began building sedimentation during her executive management of the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority.
management activities at Loya Reservoir.
Work at this site initiated the collaboration between the co-authors that ultimately led to this guidebook.
Many workers from around the world, more than we can name individually, have been very helpful in providing time, insights, information, materials, photographs, and permission to reproduce.
Our methods are especially indebted to those who provided detailed information on
case studies:
Ismail Tolouei (Sefid Rud); Gian Rechsteiner (Gebidem); Alexis Rodriguez, Ake Sundborg and Margaret Johnson (Cachi); Xia Meiding (Heisonglin); Richard Webb and Alan Zack (Luisa); and
Donna Lindquist, Kelly Clifton, Larry Harrison, Howard Chang and Scott Tew (Bear River). Alain Petitjean and Jean Pierre Bouchard provided information on France.
The contributions of Shushan Fan on reservoirs to the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission are greatly appreciated. Robert McArthur, George Annandale, Robert Strand, Vic Gala, Andrea
Handler-Ruiz, Tom Skelly, Rollin Hotchkiss and Kathleen Wilson were all very helpful.
Specialists from the following institutions also provided valuable information and assistance:
China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (Beijing), Northwest Hydrotechnical Institute
(Xian), U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Geological Survey, U.S.
Natural Resources Conservation Service, U.S. Forest Service, Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority, and Los Angeles County Department of Public Services.
Editorial support from McGraw-Hill was superb.
