Mechanics of Materials
The main objective of studying mechanics of materials is to provide the future engineer with the tools for analysis and design of various machines and load-bearing structures.
Analysis and design have a defined structure. The first chapter is devoted to calculating stresses and deformations and to the concept of stress.
Section 1.2 provides a brief review of the fundamental methods of statics and their application in determining the forces in the members of a simple structure consisting of pin-connected members.
Section 1.3 introduces you to the concept of stress in a member
from the force present in the member. After a brief discussion of engineering analysis and design (Section 1.4), you will successively consider normal
stress in a member under axial loading (Section 1.5), shear stresses resulting from the application of equal and opposite transverse forces
(Section 1.6), and bearing stresses created by bolts and pins in the members they connect
(Section 1.7). These various concepts will be
applied in Sec. 1.8 to determine the stresses in the members of the simple structure previously discussed in Sec. 1.2.
