Earthquake Engineering Guide Earthquake Engineering Guide is a comprehensive and practical resource that covers the following: The range of disciplines aimed at reducing the effects of earthquakes and designing earthquake-resistant structures, taking into account the required medical relief. It focuses on the graduate engineer who needs a single reference source to become acquainted with new techniques and practices, as well as to review standard earthquake engineering practices, which first and foremost requires knowledge of the geological causes and the expected ground motions. Liquefaction and other effects caused by a strong earthquake. It also requires a good understanding of the impacts these natural effects have on humans. In this sense, an earthquake is an almost unique natural phenomenon, in that it affects almost everything in an area - even the furniture inside a building and underground structures. The guidebook is divided into five parts, and at the outset, the first part examines the fundamental problem. It presents earthquakes from a historical perspective, an overview of the framework within which earthquake risk is managed, and an introduction to dynamics, since an earthquake is fundamentally a dynamic process and problem. The second part of this booklet addresses the earth science aspects, covering geology, tectonics, liquefaction, and tsunamis, with a particular focus on strong earthquake ground motion. Parts III and IV address a wide range of structures including steel, concrete, timber, and frame buildings. They also cover special structures such as bridges and equipment, and various types of infrastructure lifelines - that is, water, power, transportation, and other systems and components without which a modern urban society cannot function. Earthquake structural engineering has also, over the past decade, witnessed an explosion of new technologies to prevent resistance to earthquake forces. These because an earthquake affects not only the physical environment but also the social environment in all its aspects. Part V addresses specific topics that the earthquake engineer must be aware of, even if not truly specialized in them. One important aspect of this is the social and economic effects of earthquakes, which have gained increasing importance. We would like to thank all the authors for their contributions, and we also appreciate their support and that of CRC Publications.
